The foundation was laid in 1765, and on 18 May 1766, the church was consecrated on the Feast of Pentecost and named Christ Church.

Tharangambadi
In May 1919, representatives met at Zion Church, Tharangambadi, to explore the possibility of Church union. The meeting brought together representatives of the Anglican and South India United Church traditions. They prayed, fasted and sought a common basis for unity.
